In short
Clients abroad worry that hiring a developer in India means working while the other person is asleep, but few get a straight answer on how much of the day actually overlaps.
Convert one fixed working day, 10:00-19:00 IST, into each country's local time, account for daylight saving, and say plainly which countries get live overlap and which work async.
If you are thinking of hiring a developer in India, the question behind most hesitation is simple: when can we actually talk?
I am a web developer in Aligarh, India, and I work 10:00-19:00 IST, Monday to Friday. Below is that exact working day converted into six countries' local time, so you can see the real overlap instead of guessing.
The short version#
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year. India has no daylight saving, so the gap to every country that does changes by an hour twice a year.
My day, 10:00-19:00 IST, is 04:30-13:30 UTC. Everything below is that window, converted.
| Country | Their local time during my day | Live overlap with a normal 9-5 day |
|---|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | 08:30-17:30 | Almost all of it |
| Singapore | 12:30-21:30 | Their afternoon, about 4.5 hours |
| Australia, Perth | 12:30-21:30 | Their afternoon, about 4.5 hours |
| Australia, Sydney | 14:30-23:30 (15:30-00:30 in daylight saving) | About 2 hours |
| United Kingdom | 04:30-13:30 in winter, 05:30-14:30 in summer | Their whole morning, about 4.5 hours |
| US and Canada, Eastern | 23:30-08:30 in winter, 00:30-09:30 in summer | None in the office day, only early starters |
| US and Canada, Pacific | 20:30-05:30 in winter, 21:30-06:30 in summer | None, async only |
These are straight conversions of my published hours. Your own office hours will shift the overlap, so treat the right-hand column as a guide.
Country by country#
UAE. Gulf Standard Time is 1.5 hours behind India and does not use daylight saving. The UAE works a Monday to Friday week, so calls fit anywhere in your day. This is the closest to having someone in the next office. See hiring a web developer for UAE businesses.
Singapore. 2.5 hours ahead of India, no daylight saving, so the gap never moves. From lunchtime to the end of your day, I am online. See Singapore.
United Kingdom. The gap is 5.5 hours in winter and 4.5 in summer. My morning is the UK's early morning, so by the time you start, I have been working for a few hours, and calls from 09:00 until early afternoon work. See the UK page.
Australia. Perth is 2.5 hours ahead of India, so it gets the longest overlap. Sydney and Melbourne are 4.5 hours ahead (5.5 in daylight saving), so your afternoon is shared. See Australia.
USA and Canada. This is the hard one. Eastern time is 9.5 to 10.5 hours behind India, Pacific 12.5 to 13.5. My working day runs mostly overnight for you. The overlap is the start of your Eastern morning, roughly 08:00-09:30 in summer, which is 17:30-19:00 for me, and only if I stay to the end of my day. Pacific has none in normal hours. See the USA and Canada.
What to do when the overlap is small#
A small overlap is a reason to change how the project runs, not to avoid it. For the USA and Canada, this is what makes it workable:
- Write the scope down. A written scope, price and timeline means nothing depends on a call you missed.
- Agree one call window. One short call per week or milestone, in the one hour that works for both, is enough.
- Use the overnight gap. Feedback sent at the end of your day is worked on while you sleep, and the update is waiting in the morning. A round of review per day is a feature of the time difference.
- Deliver in milestones. Preview links at each stage, so you review on your schedule rather than at a deadline.
I wrote more about this in what a website costs in US dollars and how to brief an overseas developer.
The takeaway#
Your overlap depends on where you are. The UAE and Singapore share most of the day, the UK and Australia share a good few hours, and the USA and Canada run async with one short call window. If you tell me your city, I can tell you exactly which hour works. You can start through the project form or read the page for your country.

Common questions
What is India's time zone?
India Standard Time (IST) is UTC+5:30 all year. India does not observe daylight saving, so the gap to countries that do changes by an hour twice a year.
Which countries overlap most with an Indian working day?
The UAE, which is only 1.5 hours behind India, and Singapore, which is 2.5 hours ahead. The UK and Australia share a few hours. The USA and western Canada share very little live time and work best async.
Can a developer in India work around my time zone?
Some can for the occasional call. It is better to agree a short fixed window for calls and run the rest in writing, so the project does not depend on anyone being awake at 11 p.m.
Does daylight saving change the overlap?
Yes, for the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia, by one hour. India, the UAE and Singapore do not use daylight saving, so those gaps never move.
