How to Write a Google Business Profile Description That Gets More Leads

By 2 min read

In short

The problem

Most Google Business Profile descriptions are vague, so Google and AI assistants cannot tell what the business does, where it works, or why anyone should trust it.

What fixed it

Open with business name, primary category and location, list your services and service areas in the first 250 characters, add a trade license number for trust, and close with a clear offer.

If you only have thirty seconds to improve how you show up on Google, spend them on your Business Profile description. Most owners leave it vague or empty, which is a missed chance to tell Google, and customers, exactly what you do.

Where to edit it#

Open your profile, click Edit profile, then go to Description.

The formula#

Line one: name, category, location. Start with your business name, your primary category and where you are. For example: "Smith Plumbing is a plumber serving Austin, Texas." This is a clear statement of fact that search engines and AI assistants can match to local searches.

Then: areas and services. List the areas you serve and the services you offer, using the same wording as your website. Consistency between the profile and the site helps both.

Mind the 250 characters. Google shows only about the first 250 characters in the small description window. Everything after that sits behind More, so put your services early.

Add a trust signal. If your trade is licensed, include your license number. It is probably the strongest trust factor you can add, and it helps a new customer feel safe contacting you. A reader who clicks More is already interested, so give them something to build confidence.

End with your offer. Close with something true and specific, such as "Free estimates. Fast turnaround."

A template you can copy#

[Business name] is a [primary category] serving [city / areas]. We offer [service 1], [service 2], [service 3] and [service 4]. [Trade] License #[number]. [Offer, e.g. Free estimates and fast turnaround.]

Checklist#

  • Name, category and location in the first line
  • Services and service areas within the first 250 characters
  • License number, if your trade has one
  • A clear offer at the end
  • Wording that matches your website

Common questions

How long can a Google Business Profile description be?

The description field allows 750 characters, but only roughly the first 250 show before the visitor clicks More. Put the most important facts in that first part.

What should the first line of my Google Business Profile description say?

Your business name, your primary category and your location. It is a plain statement of fact that search engines and AI assistants can read and match to local searches.

Should I put my license number in my Google Business Profile?

If your trade is licensed, yes. A license number is one of the strongest trust signals you can show a new customer, and it costs nothing to add. Only include a real, current number.

What offer should I end the description with?

Something simple and true, such as free estimates or fast turnaround. It gives the reader a reason to contact you now.

One click opens LinkedIn with a ready-written post: a hook, the short version of this guide and the link. The caption is also copied, so you can paste it if it does not appear.

Instagram has no web share link, so this gives you both pieces: copy the caption, save the card, then post it.
